Campden Hill Square
Location: Kensington, London
Year: 2010
Client: Mr & Mrs J. Lloyd
Value: £1.5m
To create this highly individual family home, in 2010 we stripped the property back to it’s bare bones and reinstated a technologically innovative and sustainable home. Working in collaboration with renowned interior designer Max Rolitt, this exciting project culminated in the additional design and delivery of a children’s playhouse at the end of the garden.
Campden Hill Square is one of the treasured Georgian squares in London. When we were appointed, the house had just been purchased and was in a dilapidated state. There was no option but to strip out the warped and creaking internal structure all except for the fine staircase which the client was keen to preserve exactly as it was. The existing lower ground floor was dug out to give more height and a glass structure inserted beside the closet wing. This structure was within permitted development rights cutting down the time required to progress the works.
This highly individual family house reflects the eclectic tastes of its owners; combining furnishings and interior design ideas from all periods. We retained original features wherever possible and recreated the period of the original building in the front rooms. As one progresses to the rear, this is contrasted with a very contemporary kitchen and lower ground floor layout and design.
The project culminated in a new garden room, which was a joy to design. The roof acts as a platform for the family’s children to climb up onto and they can either enter their playhouse via a skylight or monkey bars. Inside it’s a tardis for family entertaining including a bed, play equipment and fully equipped kitchen.
Our approach to sustainable technology was equally creative, from good use of the building fabric for insulation to grey water systems, the project combined both innovative and traditional technological solutions to make an attractive, flexible and remarkably sustainable family home.
