Salcombe Gin Distillery

Location: Salcombe, Devon
Year: 2016
Client: Salcombe Distilling Company

Adams + Collingwood Architects designed a new headquarters for Salcombe Gin Distillery. The project combines two new buildings which establish their own modern architectural language with a palette of local and traditional industrial materials that suit the context of Salcombe’s boat builders that surround the headquarters.

The ground floor of both buildings are ‘water compatible developments’ and are designed to be allowed to flood. The lobby area is constructed with flood protection measures, including external fitted flood boards to the main doors, to prevent water ingress in to the shared facilities.

In the main building the first floor houses a gin distillery which offers a new quality, year round attraction to the town. The gin stills are purposefully designed to be on show from the large first floor window looking onto the street. Adams + Collingwood Architects designed a ‘room with a view’ to encourage tasting of the gin with the added bonus of views towards Batson Creek.

In the Gin Gallery, the Salcombe Distilling Company invite members of the public to make their own gin in a purpose built room below the Tonic Gallery, which occupies the ground floor retail space with glass corners onto Island Street.
